A View from the Inside

E-mail Print PDF

Talk given at PAG's 28th March 2011 public meeting "Identifying Election Issues".

I expect some of you will wish to put forward particular issues you feel strongly about so I thought a more general view gleaned from the fairly short time I have been a member of the Keys might provide another dimension to tonight’s meeting.

I have called it ‘a view from the inside’.

As a preface to what follows I would like to say that anyone might be forgiven for thinking that I am simply a closed minded critic with nothing good to say.

I hope nothing is further from the truth for the Isle of Man is a deeply blessed place in having its own parliament. That such a small community has the potential to so significantly decide its own fate is indeed remarkable – we have a great gift – a gift that should provide us all with an opportunity to make a difference.

Who would be best able to protect our ferry lifeline?

Protecting our ferry lifeline is not the same thing as protecting the interests of the current owners any more than it is about pretending that the user agreement has served us well. Protecting our lifeline is simply about ensuring the Isle of Man has a good quality, value for money reliable service that serves our various needs well. In the heat of the current debate it would be very easy to lose sight of this important principle.

Speech on Child Care 16.11.2010

E-mail Print PDF

Speech made during the Tynwald debate on Child Care Tuesday November 16th 2010

Thank you Mr President. It goes without saying but I will say it anyway. I am absolutely sure that there is not one single member of this honourable court who does not care enormously about our children. To suggest otherwise would be a heinous thing to do and I do not do it.

Perhaps it is because we all care so much that we find this a truly difficult subject. Perhaps the most difficult.

You will therefore understand that I do not bring this motion before you lightly and not before I have carried out a considerable investigation. I am deeply sorry that I find it necessary to bring this before you but I speak now for those who have no voice and I would respectfully ask you to listen to what I have to say – to what they have to say. If you listen to nothing else I have to say - please listen to this with a truly open heart and an open mind. It is late and honourable members are tered but I would beg your attention.
